The order says the parents must communicate through a parenting app. One parent sends every schedule change there. The other checks it once a week, responds by text, or claims that an unread message does not count as notice.
It is 7:20 on a school morning, and the child will not get into the car. One parent says the child is anxious and needs time. The other says the refusal is being encouraged to disrupt school and parenting time.
The tuition invoice arrives before the parents have resolved who may select the school. One parent assumes the child will remain enrolled and the cost will be shared. The other points to guideline support and says private-school tuition was never agreed upon.
The teacher schedules one twenty-minute conference. Both parents want to attend, but they cannot sit in the same room without arguing. One asks the school for a second appointment. The other insists that a separate meeting is an attempt to control the narrative.
An IEP meeting is scheduled for Friday. One parent wants the assessment and proposed services. The other says no evaluation should happen without a second opinion. The school is receiving conflicting instructions while the child waits.
One late arrival may be a flat tire. Four tardies after the same weekly exchange can be a pattern. When school attendance problems repeatedly occur during one parent’s custody time, the issue is no longer just an argument about punctuality. It may affect the child’s education, stability, sleep, and relationship with both households.
The custody schedule looked workable in August. By September, one child is arriving late, homework is traveling between houses unfinished, and exchanges that seemed simple on paper are colliding with Los Angeles traffic, sports, and two demanding work calendars.
Most custody conflict is private. Text threads, exchanges in a driveway, email chains nobody else will ever read.
One parent proposes a boarding school in Connecticut. Or a spring term in Madrid. Or a ski academy in Colorado for a child who is genuinely fast.
